What does Real Friends listen to? Also, I can't get enough of jxdn's new album
and did MGK have to change the name of his movie because of Mac Miller's brother?
Happy America Day, if you live in America. If not, Happy Monday? Also, quick question, would you prefer YouTube links or Spotify links in these emails when I’m recommending music? I much prefer to keep everything on Spotify, but I know some people don’t fuck with that.

5 SONGS RELEASED THIS WEEK THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
YUNGBLUD - “Like A Virgin” (Madonna cover)
As part of his new two-song Spotify Singles session, recorded at the legendary Sound City studios in Los Angeles. YUNGBLUD says “When we were choosing a song to cover, I wanted it to be completely out of the box yet make absolute sense all at the same time. Madonna is a massive idol of mine, I admire every move she artistically made. I wanted to take the classic, add some YUNGBLUD energy and shake it the fuck up! This is a song I heard growing up, my mum and my sisters used to play it all the time so that added real pressure to get it right!” The other track on the Singles Sesh is a stripped back version of his song “Mars.”
Make Them Suffer - “Contraband” (feat. Courtney LaPlante from Spiritbox)
"'Contraband' came together centered around one of the riffs in the song that we'd aptly named the 'floppy fingers' riff," says vocalist Sean Harmanis. "We'd actually had this [riff] in the bank since way back in 2016. As the song came together, we decided that it was a great opportunity to include Make Them Suffer's first-ever guest feature, and we couldn't have picked anyone better than Courtney! She was a joy to work with and showed such a great enthusiasm toward the song and her parts."
Poppy - “Her”
Poppy just dropped a new EP a few weeks ago as part of a collab with WWE’s NXT and the multi-genre artist is already back with a new single called “Her.” The track opts for a jangly garage/grunge rock vibe, accompanied by an animated stop-motion music video.
Attila - “Day Drinking”
Metalcore party band Attila dropped the dive bar-friendly track “Day Drinking,” which which will be on their upcoming new full-length album ‘Closure’ (out July 23rd). The track is definitely a bit more in the butt rock realm than metalcore, with a pretty awesome music video that sees the band, well, day drinking at a bar in hawaian shirts and doing karaoke.
jxdn, MGK, Travis Barker - “Wanna Be”
Travis Barker’s protege jxdn has released his new album “Tell Me About Tomorrow” on Barker’s new label DTA Records. The lead single “Wanna Be” is the ultimate pop punk anthem featuring MGK and tying together the whole record’s throwback meets nu-punk vibes. Check out my 10 second album review here.
If you want to hear all these songs and the rest of this week's best new music, you can find them all on my "New Scene Sunday" playlist.
MGK has to change the name of his upcoming movie due to Mac Miller’s brother giving them shit on social media.
The upcoming movie depicting Machine Gun Kelly as a doomed musician was called “Good News.” Its story is based on several rappers who faced untimely demises such as Mac Miller, Juice WLRD and Pop Smoke.
The movie's title was also the name of one of Miller's songs and Miller's surviving brother, Miller McCormick, took issue with this saying "Fuck you, fuck your movie, at least change the title," in an Instagram Story. The production team behind movie responded saying it’s a fictional movie, not a biopic, but they now see why the title could be insensitive. I think they just don’t want to deal with the backlash and I don’t blame them.
An update on Mark Hoppus’ battle with cancer
“On good days, I go do stuff,” he said. “I went on a walk outside today and it was the first time I’d left my house in like… five days pretty much. But this round of chemo I wasn’t totally stuck on the couch, miserable. I’ve actually watched movies and walked around and cleaned the house and hung out with my dogs. I didn’t just feel like a poisoned electrified zombie leaned up against an electric fence like I did the past couple of rounds.”
He’s understandably frustrated with not being able to leave the house saying. “I can’t go anywhere right now. I wanted to go to the Dodgers last night. I can’t. I want to go hang out with friends and go to a restaurant. I can’t,” he said. “My white blood cell count is way too low for me to go out, so I am stuck trying to get better. That’s alright, I’ll take it.”

BANDS THAT DON’T SUCK AND WILL PROBABLY BLOW UP
Each week, I pick one on-the-rise, emerging artist that I think we should all keep an eye on, so that one day we can say "hey, I knew about them before they blew up."
This week's pick is the metalcore band Versus Me (for fans of I Prevail, Architects). With over 2 million streams on Spotify tours with I Prevail, the band’s slickly produced metalcore will definitely get your blood-pumping. Their new song “Control” is catchy as hell and comes with a movie-quality music video that sees their vocalist James getting the shit kicked out of him.
