Music Picks from Phem, New Mayday Parade Single
and unfortunately we have to talk about Mark Hoppus
If you’ve had me all up in your inbox before, you may have noticed the newsletter looks a little different. I’m trying out a new platform called Substack, it’s the platform all the hip writers are using now and I’m on that bandwagon bullshit.
This week on the show the artist Phem is on to play us some tunes and talk about the songs that are checking all her boxes at the moment, new music from Mayday Parade, and an update on the unfortunate medical situation with blink 182’s Mark Hoppus
5 SONGS RELEASED THIS WEEK THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
1. The music world has been sobbin over the news about Mark Hoppus (which we will get into a little bit later), but the blink 182 bassist/vocalist collabed with the alternative artist Arrested Youth for a new single called “Find My Own Way.” The track is off Arrested Youth’s debut album “Nonfiction” which is out now.
2. Pop punk band Real Friends have returned with a new vocalist and a new single called “Nervous Wreck.” Their new vocalist Cody Muraro comes from the band Youth Fountain. Both bands are currently signed to Pure Noise Records which is pretty interesting. AltPress says “Reminiscent of their former values and lyrical sentiments, Real Friends’ new singles address isolation, anxiety and more, with Muraro at the mic.”
3. grandson and Jessie Reyez were forced to drop their new single a little early. The two have teamed up for a new track called "Rain" which was featured on the trailer for writer/director James Gunn’s new Suicide Squad film. Well, the trailer leaked early and according to grandson's TikTok, he had to cut his family vacation short so he could race home and begin unexpected promotion for the release.
4. 3OH!3 and The Used put out a new track together called "Vampire's Diet" and it's everything my 2000's emo heart wants. Just seeing those names together on a playlist make me want to go to Hot Topic and update my MySpace profile. The song kicks ass too.
5. Emo royalty Mayday Parade have released a new single and video for “Kids Of Summer” via Rise Records. “’Kids Of Summer’ is about one of the greatest moments in our band’s career which was touring numerous times on the Vans Warped Tour,” drummer Jake Bundrick shares about the new song. “Not only has that summer tour helped our band find an identity over the years, but it’s also helped us find our own selves in ways. We also know fans of ours and of the tour itself feel the same way, so we wanted to capture all of that in a summer anthem.”
If you want to hear all these songs and the rest of this week's best new music, you can find them all on my "New Scene Sunday" playlist
ALT WEEKLY SCOOP
I know you're busy and it's hard to keep up with all the shit happening in music news, so here's your alt weekly scoop!
Mark Hoppus Reveals Cancer Diagnosis
Unfortunately we have to talk about this one, Blink-182 singer and bassist Mark Hoppus is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer, he said Wednesday on his social media accounts. Hoppus said that he's receiving treatment, but didn't reveal the type of cancer he has. He posted a photo of himself on his Instagram story with an IV in his arm and the caption "Yes hello. One cancer treatment, please," and then later deleted it.
He then followed up with a formal post saying "I have cancer. It sucks and I'm scared, and at the same time I'm blessed with incredible doctors and family and friends to get me through this. I still have months of treatment ahead of me but I'm trying to remain hopeful and positive. Can't wait to be cancer free and see you all at a concert in the hopefully near future. Love to you all." So fucking lame. I of course hope for a speedy recovery for him.
Nirvana’s Nevermind and Metallica’s Black Album both Turning 30
The 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s Nevermind album is coming up in September and bassist Krist Novoselic said they are putting together something in celebration, but doesn't want to ruin any surprises.
The 30th anniversary of Metallica's Black Album is coming up this summer too, they've already announced some cool boxsets and shit.
It's crazy that both these albums came out in the same summer. They're so polar opposite and stood against each other sonically. Hair and thrash metal hated grunge and vice versa, but yet both albums are without a doubt each band's most successful release. Cray cray.

BANDS THAT DON’T SUCK AND WILL PROBABLY BLOW UP
Each week, I pick one on-the-rise, emerging artist that I think we should all keep an eye on, so that one day we can say "hey, I knew about them before they blew up."
DEAD ROMANTIC
This week's pick is the metalcore band Dead Romantic (for fans of Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, Linkin Park). They were featured on the latest issue of Rock Sound and have had multiple official Spotify placements. Their new song "Kissed With A Lie" is about not wanting to be wrapped up in a lie, just because it's comfortable.
