Lizzo changes song over ableist slur
+ Post Malone goes grunge, Tommy Lee is replaced mid-concert + more
Yo-yo-yo-yo-yooo, I hope you had a good Father’s Day Weekend and Juneteenth. I went to see the Lightyear movie for about 65 minutes before my toddler got restless and wanted to leave the theater. If you see it, please let me know how it ends?
This is the first edition of this little newsletter format I’m trying out. Sort of a recap of all the stuff I’ve posted on TikTok/IG in the past week, along with the some other stuff I found interesting, but didn’t get a chance to talk about. I may also use this as a way to expand upon topics that don’t fit into a 30-second vertical video. Any feedback, good or bad, is appreciated!
ELDERLY CROWD SURFER DROPPED ON HIS HEAD AT THE KILLERS CONCERT
Frontman Brandon Flowers noticed the 67 year old being carried over the barrier and went to check on him and give him a hug. The man told Flowers that his name was Billy, but people in the comments keep saying his name is actually Doug, so maybe that gnarly wound on his head had him mixed up. Either way, this dude is who we should all aspire to be in our later years.
Watch Brandon Flowers’ full reaction below.
LIZZO WAS ACCUSED OF USING AN ABLEIST SLUR IN HER SONG “GRRRLS”
In the song, lizzo says, “hold my bag, bitch, hold my bag / do you see this shit? i’ma sp*z.” There was some social media outrage over the word sp*z because in the UK, the word sp*z and sp*stic movements are often used as an insult to people with Cerebral Palsy.
If you’re wondering why I’m censoring the word in this post, it’s because when I did the news story on TikTok, I got a lot of shit from people because I quoted the word. I understand this word is hurtful to some with CP and would never use it in that context, but I was quoting a news story and I guess that’s still not okay. I’m not sure how else I would have gotten the information out there? Some suggested I bleep the word and show it on the screen (because that’s better for some reason?). A lot of people said they’d still be confused since they’re not familiar with the word being a slur. It all seems counterproductive. Majority of people in the US have never heard that word used in that context, so we have to be able to discuss it, if we want to inform the public and make any change. And no, to anyone who made the ridiculous comparison, it’s not the same as saying the “N” word in a news story.
Anyway, Lizzo was quick to address this, re-recording the lyric and releasing a new version of the song less than 24 hours later and issued this statement
POST MALONE HAS COVERED ANOTHER 90’S GRUNGE CLASSIC
In a performance on The Howard Stern Show, Malone dedicated a cover of the song “Better Man” by Pearl Jam to his brother. In Malone’s tribute, it sounded like his brother had passed away, but he assured us he’s still alive, he’s just a beautiful man that introduced him to Pearl Jam.
I think he nailed the cover. Obviously Eddie Vedder is the OG, but this version is great, as is most of Malone’s covers (check out the top 10 Post Malone rock covers). I wish he’d just drop a rock album already, haha.
THIS 10-YEAR-OLD SHOCKED AMERICA’S GOT TALENT WITH HER COVER OF SPIRITBOX’S “HOLY ROLLER”
The judges were initially like “aw, how cute” when Harper walked out in a black, flowery dress, but when she started the opening stanza of the metal track, people already looked fearful (and that was just the spoken-word part). Once the screaming kicked in, that’s when people really lost it.
Look, I’m not that naive. I know a lot of the audience/judge reaction is scripted, but it’s still fun, dammit!
The judges loved her performance and sent her to the next round, but what might be even better, was she got to join Spiritbox on stage later that night at a show.
TOMMY LEE WAS REPLACED MID-CONCERT + MOTLEY CRUE JOINED BY MGK
Tommy Lee drummed 5 songs on the opening night of Motley Crue’s co-headlining stadium tour with Def Leppard, before announcing that he broke four ribs just days ago and doctors told him he shouldn’t play.
Lee basically said fuck that, he wasn’t going to miss this tour that they’ve been waiting for years to do, so he’s going to play as much as he can and Ozzy Osbourne drummer Tommy Clufetos will be filling in for him on the rest.

That wasn’t the only surprise though. MGK, who played Tommy Lee in the Netflix movie The Dirt, joined the band on stage for a song as well. They played a live debut of “The Dirt (Est. 1981),” a song MGK recorded with the band for the soundtrack to the the movie (which is a fun movie I highly suggest watching, even if you hate MGK.)
