It’s been 72 hours and people are STILL pissed about the TikTok I posted about MGK’s new song. All I said was I thought the song had more grunge influence than pop punk influence and by the way people reacted, you would have thought that I dug up Kurt Cobain’s skeleton and took a shit in his rib cage.

5 SONGS RELEASED LAST WEEK THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
1) Black Veil Brides - “Torch”
Black Veil Brides have released the fourth single ahead of their upcoming album The Phantom Tomorrow. In the lead up to the new album, the band have been using their music videos to tell the story of the record's central character Blackbird. I didn’t notice that in the first three videos, but that’s still cool, ha. The new song "Torch" concludes that series, but frontman Andy Biersack assures the narrative of the album is not done. The Phantom Tomorrow is due October 29th via Sumerian Records.
2) Hawthorne Heights - “The Rain Just Follows Me”
Hawthorne Heights have released the title track from their upcoming 8th album The Rain Just Follows Me. I had to go back and check that number, I couldn’t believe they’ve released that many albums, but they did! And they’re all bangers. “The Rain Just Follows Me” almost has some 90’s Third Eye Blind vibes to it, but still intertwines the band’s signature screamo energy. The album will be out on September 10th on Pure Noise Records.
3) Sueco - “Paralyzed”
By now, you’ve probably seen Sueco’s viral videos on TikTok. He’s also collabed with Papa Roach and the almighty Travis Barker recently. This new single sees him flexing those pop punk muscles with an abrasive vocal delivery on top of a gorgeous piano arrangement. Somehow, SOMEHOW, it really works.
4) Thrice - “Robot Soft Exorcism”
Thrice have unveiled the almost meditative, electronic-heavy track "Robot Soft Exorcism" from their upcoming Horizons/East album. You can't help but notice a Radiohead influence with this one, even the title sounds like something Radiohead would release, ha. I dig it though. The new album will be out on September 17th.
5. Machine Gun Kelly, Travis Barker - “Papercuts”
And finally, the MGK track I talked about earlier, lol. I fucking love it regardless of what people think of the style. The song is the first single from his new album Born with Horns (release date TBA). Check out his matching tat with Barker.
If you want to hear all these songs and the rest of this week's best new music, you can find them all on my "New Scene Sunday" playlist.
What is “All That I’ve Got” by The Used REALLY about?
“All That I've Got" is the second single from the Used album In Love and Death, which has since been certified platinum. Despite the melodic and upbeat tone to the song, the lyrics actually tell a pretty sad fucking story.
Many believe the song was written about McCracken's ex-girlfriend who passed away suddenly while she was pregnant with their child. This would obviously have a profound impact on Bert, however, that may not be the actual inspiration for the song.
Supposedly, McCracken’s girlfriend actually passed away months after the record was completed, while the band was on tour. So what inspired the somber story then?
In an interview with Kerrang! Magazine, McCracken leads us to believe it was about his Chihuahua that was hit by a car. He said "I had a dog named David Bowie, who was my best buddy for, like a whole year. Dogs are incredible companions, and I've never really lost anyone close to me at that point. When I left to make In Love and Death, I booked the wrong ticket and I couldn't fly my dog, so my friend was planning to fly out with David Bowie two days later, and he was hit by a car that very next day. So yeah, as serious moment in my life, your first experience with death is a serious one."
So what do you think? Was it about his ex-gf and their unborn child or his best furry friend? If the timeline is off, maybe it's a combination of both?
No matter what it’s about, it’s still a great song, so let’s fire it up!
BANDS THAT DON’T SUCK AND WILL PROBABLY BLOW UP
Each week, I pick one on-the-rise, emerging artist that I think we should all keep an eye on, so that one day we can say "hey, I knew about them before they blew up."
Those Who Dream
This week's pick is the super pop punk band Those Who Dream. They remind me a little bit of Good Charlotte meets Waterparks and their new single “Bubblegum” is a lot of fun. NME calls it “An angsty pop jam about “a ‘last straw’ moment in a dumpster-fire of a relationship.”
