THIS WEEK: Destroy Boys are on the show + new music from POORSTACY, Ice Nine Kills and more.
also, we find out why the fuck Flava Flav was in a Taking Back Sunday music video
I bought 3 new Vans hats this week because I couldn’t decide and trying on hats in stores kinda skeezes me out. The result was all three hats are too big for my tiny head, but I’m definitely way too lazy to return them, so have fun seeing me looking like a toddler in a grown-ups hat for the foreseeable future. Speaking of toddlers, have you watched Boss Baby 2 yet? It’s been on constant loop in my house because my son can’t get enough. It’s pretty good!
Hit me up on TikTok or Instagram and tell me what you think.

5 SONGS RELEASED THIS WEEK THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED
Yours Truly - “Walk Over My Grave”
Aussie pop punks enter a new era with their first taste of new music since their acclaimed 2020 album Self Care. The new single “Walk Over My Grave” finds the band toying with the idea of a person haunting you after they may have physically left your life, and the question as to whether you are haunting them too. The music video really shows a new aesthetic for the band, from all the imagery and even their clothing. It’s all very dark and gritty.
Sophie Powers, Kellin Quinn "- “1 Thing”
Kellin Quinn collabed with the 16 year old artist Sophie Powers for a new song called “1 Thing.” I’m not too familiar with Sophie’s music as I believe she’s super new on the scene, but this track has some great old MySpace/Medic Droid era energy.
DE’WAYNE, Phem, American Teeth - “Sick”
Distorted 10 alumni artists DE’WAYNE, Phem, and American Teeth have all teamed up for a new track called “Sick.” The track touches on knowing that certain bad habits will make you unhappy, sad or angry but not wanting to give them up. The song has a smooth, windows-down indie vibe.
girlfriends - “Tattoo”
Podcast favorites girlfriends dropped a new pop punk chest beater called “Tattoo.” A bouncy, catchy track about getting a tattoo to remind you or someone you miss. The band will be on tour this summer with Mod Sun and Tyler Posey. I tried to get tickets, it didn’t work because the Livenation site is glitchy AF.
POORSTACY - “Children of the Dark”
Alternative artist POORSTACY released a new song called “Children of the Dark.” There’s some serious 2000’s screamo energy in this one. It starts off a bit like an old AFI song but soon the harsh screaming comes in and the aggression and darkness of the track really picks up. I love POORSTACY’s versatility, I mean he goes from trap and hip hop music, to dropping shit that could be on the same playlist with The Used or something.
BONUS: Ice Nine Kills, Jacoby Shaddix - “Hip to be Scared”
Ice Nine Kills released a pretty great tribute/parody of the American Psycho movie. It also features Jacoby Shaddix from Papa Roach. American Psycho is one of my favorite movies that never seems to be anyone else’s. Generally when I show people this movie I'm meant with a lot of confusion, ha. Have you seen it? What do you think? Also, watch this!
If you want to hear all these songs and the rest of this week's best new music, you can find them all on my "New Scene Sunday" playlist.
Why the fuck was Flava Flav in a Taking Back Sunday music video?
I’m trying something new on the podcast/newsletter, where I do a deep dive on a classic music video or song. Sort of like a “do you know your scene kid history” or something. For the first one we find out, why the fuck Flava Flav was in a Taking Back Sunday music video.
In 2003, Taking Back Sunday was riding high on the release of their debut album Tell All Your Friends. Before the release of the record’s third single “You’re So Last Summer,” founding member John Nolan was replaced by Fred Mascherino. This led to the creation of one of the most iconic videos of all time. Frontman Adam Lazzara said, “We had two guys leave our band and one of them was one of our main singers, so we were trying to think of a way to bring the new band members into the video, but not have Fred singing the old guy’s part.” Enter Flava mutha fucking Flav who is seen singing the song. I’m sure when people saw this they were like, “is he in the band now?!” Flava Flav did not tone it down at all, he looks as ridiculous as ever. So let’s jump in the way back machine and listen to it.
BANDS THAT DON’T SUCK AND WILL PROBABLY BLOW UP
Each week, I pick one on-the-rise, emerging artist that I think we should all keep an eye on, so that one day we can say "hey, I knew about them before they blew up."
This week's pick is the nu-metal band Dropout Kings. I recently made a post on TikTok about the rise of trap metal and the whole nu-metal revival that has been bubbling for a little bit and I think it’s really going to explode this year. Dropout Kings is one of the bands I think will be at the forefront of that. Big Linkin Park vibes with this band and their new song “Virus” was recently put into rotation on iHeart Radio.
